Sustainable Self-Care: How To Be Good To Yourself AND The Environment

I’m sure you hear this all the time: self-care is super important. And it is. Keeping your health and well-being top of mind should always be a priority. But oftentimes, self-care can lead to some bad impacts on the environment.

The good news is, there are ways to make your self-care routine more eco-friendly. Here are some ideas to care for yourself while also caring for Mother Earth.

1. DIY Facemask

A facemask can be really refreshing and the best kind are usually made from things you can find in your kitchen! You can use oatmeal, eggs, berries, yogurt, avocados, etc to make a facemask that will make your skin glow.

You might say, “well I can just buy facemasks at the store.” Unfortunately, skincare and cosmetic companies use excess packaging that is wasteful and not eco-friendly. Seriously, is it necessary to wrap your products in one box, then a plastic sleeve, and then another box just to ship it? And then the ingredients in the facemask may not always be the greatest or top quality.

So by DIYing, not only are you choosing the better option for the environment, you are also choosing the better option for you!

2. Natural Products

If you’re really just not the DIY kind of person, I get it. Some people just aren’t into that kind of thing and thats okay! There are natural products you can find for facemasks, make-up, and skincare.

Also, if you are going to be buying products, make sure they come in recyclable containers like glass or metal, and are shipped in environmentally-friendly packaging. All of this information can be found on their website if it is something they are passionate about.

Another way to be eco-friendly if you are buying, is to reuse old containers. You can use them for storing any number of things. Be creative to find uses for old containers.

3. Meditation

This is something that doesn’t really require a whole lot of anything. If you are well-versed in meditation, all you need is yourself and maybe some soothing music. If you are a beginner, you can find guided meditation apps on your phone or on youtube.

This is a great way to unwind, forget your stress, and just be. I recently made meditation part of my morning routine and it’s always the perfect way to start my day with a clear head and a good attitude.

4. Exercise

This one might seem pretty obvious for physical health, but many people don’t realize how beneficial exercise can be for your mental health. Just like meditation, exercise can help you unwind and forget your stress. Since you focus is on the activity at hand, anything that might be bothering you fades away.

Exercise also losens your muscles that get tight from stress, decreases anxiety, and is a natural antidepressant. Physical activity is the perfect way to take time for yourself that improves both your mental and physical health.

5. Journal

This is such a big one. It is always a great idea to unload everything you are thinking. It helps you breathe easier and feel lighter. Keeping things locked inside can lead to more stress, anxiety and depression. But if you feel uncomfortable talking to another person, journaling is the perfect way to unload.

If you are more of a pen and paper type of journaler, then you can make sure to find journals made from recycled materials and use eco-friendly pens or pencils.

If you are more of a digital journaler, then you are good to go. But make sure you recycle your computer in the proper way once it goes to computer heaven.
